i have a white lacquer dresser that i would like to paint black. Can lacquer be sanded?

Yes it can be sanded. You may want to be careful of what your sanding. If your dresser is veneer you want to remove as little material as possible. If you have any cracks or nicks you will want to fill them before sanding. And of coarse, sand with the grain.

You can either sand and then prime and paint or apply a product called Liquid Sandpaper and then prime and paint. The Liquid Sandpaper provides a slightly roughened surface, or tooth, to the lacquer so the primer and paint will adhere. Use a high adhesion primer as well. Should work out just fine for you.

You're going to have to get the lacquer off. Go to a Ace Hardware or Home Depot and buy a stripping product. Follow the directions. Ace Hardware employees are really helpful and know their stuff. Then you'll need to lightly sand it with sandpaper and then steel wool. Then it will be ready to paint. Good luck!

If you attempt it wear a mask to protect your lungs. Sanding would give it a bit of a "tooth" that would help the paint adhere.

Sand lightly and apply a good ahdesive primer.
