Newer VW 's , 1999 and after are good cars. In my opinion the old VW's suck.... They were easy to work on, but you had to work on them constantly...

I must say, I have 2 volkswagens, a 2000 jetta 2.0 and a 2006 jetta tdi. The 2000 has over 150 thousand km and still runs like its brand new. The body holds up very well, I have people asking me all the time if it's new.
The tdi runs like a beauty, as brand new cars are supposed to, the only problem is that it seems to have squealing breaks once in a while, maybe due to the cold weather but volkswagen is doing absolutely whatever they can to fix them. The service is great. The mileage is amazing and it's tons of fun to drive...especially when you hear the turbo kick in.
I would definately recommend a volkswagen.

The Pros:
Reliable, well engineered, stylish cars. As long as they are maintained they will run forever.
The Cons:
Expensive to repair, too many quirky nuisiance issues that VW may or may not fix for you. One example is my 2000 Jetta with the broken glove box. Turns out it's a defect that VW never recalled.
As others have said, VW's quality has gotten much better over the past several years. My Jetta has 154,000 miles on it and runs magnificently. Yes, I do recommend them.

"Good car" is a relative term. Good compared to what?
VW makes a wide range of products. Brand New, they are great like everything out there in the market.
I've owned MANY VW's. I'd safely state that modern Honda and Toyota vehicles are much better that VWs of today.

Yes they are. They are average in reliability but the VW GTI is almost as reliable as the Japanese cars. VW offers the most standard features in there cars. That means you get more than what you pay for. The interiors of VW's are very luxurios.

All brands of cars have problems, but, generally speaking, VW's are good cars.
I do not like the 1.8T or 2.0 engines, however.
I would suggest either a TDI engine equipped vehicle, or a 2.5L engine if you are shopping.
the 2.0 is nicknamed the 2.slow
and the 1.8T has .. issues

Out of the 7 people I know who have had them only one had a good one. They all either fell apart or broke down and two got the Lemon Law on them. It had nothing to do with how they took care of them because all of them were bought brand new and started there problems shortly after driving off the lot.

If you get a newer model. They are reasonably safe and solid vehicles that should prove to be a lot of fun. Just make sure to keep the maintnance up so it doesn't brake down. Check http://www.edmunds.com for more information on all vehicles including VWs.

VW's have gotten a lot better over the years. So to answer your question yes they are. They are fairly inexpensive and have good features. I have owned a few and I would still buy one.
