The element Mercury (in ionic or combined chemical forms) was recognized as a toxin since ancient times. Poison or not, it was allowed to be used in medicine and industry until relatively recent times.

The United States Public Health Service banned the use of mercury in the felt industry in 1941. Its use is still allowed in other areas.
