You misdid the addition. Please let me explain.
The three men did each pay $9 for the room, but that includes what the bellboy kept. The other $3 were given to the men, $1 each.
$9*3+$1*3=$30

The riddle is just not worded 'properly'.
If you have the $30, return $3. then the Bellboy had kept $2. you are not adding the $2 but rather subtracting it.
Therefore, as each (3) paid $9 = $27.
Minus the $2 that the Bellboy kept = $25.

They each paid $10 and got back $1, so they each paid $9.
9 x 3 = 27
so they paid a total of $27.
Then you're not supposed to add the other $2, you subtract it. $3 of the 30 was given back, so that's subtracted, and $2 was kept by the bellboy, so you subract that also.
27 - 2 = 25
Which is what they were supposed to pay.

Since the bellboy kept 2
Each man supposedly paid 25/3 +1 (returned) = 25/3 + 3/3 = 28/3
Therefore all three men supposedly paid 28/3 X3 = 28
3 was subsequently returned to the three 1X3=3
28-3=25 which is the room rent

Look at it like this:
3 men each get a dollar 3x$1=$3
1 bellboy got 2 dollars 1x$2=$2
$3 + $2= $5.00

Yep the first guy was right. You can't add it up the way it was stated in the riddle. Each man paid $9, for a total of $27; if you add the $3 they got back, that adds up to $30, what they originally paid.

The men get $5 in change. $5 divided 3 ways gives $1.67 per person. Each man acually paid $8.33 per person for the room. $8.33 X 3 = $25. $25 plus the $5 change, no matter how it is split, equals $30.
