There are many breeds of dogs that will suit you, large, medium and small.
It is mostly going to depend on what the temper of the dog is and how much you can handle.
If you get a smaller dog, they eat less (cost less to feed in theory), but they often need more or the same exercise as any large breed.
If you have lots of time and like taking the dog with you everywhere, you may want to consider a Golden Retriever or some such natured dog.
Myself, I have a Rottie/Shepard mix, and couldn't ask for a better dog. I live in a 2BR/ 2 Ba. and she's just great and we get along perfectly in here, and she's nearly 100 lbs. But I walk her often and take her nearly everywhere I go that I can.
Also, you may want to consider getting a mix-breed dog. They are mentally and physically healthier than their "pure breed" counter parts.
Go to the local area county animal shelter or rescue organization and visit with various dogs that you think are cute and see what one jumps up and wants to sit in your lap. Then that's the breed of dog you want!
Congratulations on your soon to be new extended family!
Cheers!

Miniature Pincher's a great to have and believe it or not a Grey hound is they are very lazy couch potatoes just give them 2 walks a day and some play time they 're good to go they are very loving and a good breed to get if you want a bigger type of dog you can rescue them from the race tracks .

There are many breeds out there to choose from. The question is, do you want a small, medium or large breed? If you want a small breed, I can tell you that A Chihuahua makes, great little companion, and is very loving and smart. I have five of my own, and I would never give them up for anything.

Don't get a chiuahuah! They are so hard to train! If you want a cool little dog get a Rat Terrier! I have one and he is the best thing that has ever happend to me (besides my boyfriend... lol)! He has a great personality and he loves me unconditionaly!
