I wonder if you'd ever get a honest answer from Christians on this one. Most will be highly defensive, while those who try to answer will transcend to faith. One can understand their predicament. But truly, the virgin birth does not makes sense whatsoever, even to many Christians.

I believe that early church elders concocted the story and corrupted some verses in the bible to give credence to that story. I however believe that it is possible that a prophet could have born who is called Jesus in the bible. But some of the utterance attributed to him are highly questionable, especially that those stories defies even faith habit!

There was no "mechanism" involved. God requested that Mary be the mother of His Son. Mary freely submitted to His will. God made it happen by an act of His will, the same way He created the universe.

It is supernatural. Being God, Jesus can pass through doors that are shut, as He demonstrates again later in life: "And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you." (John 20:26)

Christians wishing to justify their belief in Jesus' divinity applied an ancient near eastern myth of the divine child to him.

well see? back in the Bible days those primitive folks didn't know anything about space ships, aliens or artificial insemination so when an alien beamed into Mary's living room and artificially inseminated her with alien DNA she thought it was an angel of "God".
