Depends on what you want to rent--- nice house, or junky apartment--- what neighborhood etc.
In the better parts of Oahu you won't find anything--but in parts of Honolulu you can get a fairly crummy apartment for under 1K.
If you were to go to the Hilo side of the Big Island (the rainiest city in the world, I believe) you can get a nice 2-3 br house and yard for $1000.
