They don't hurt when they are being placed. You will be sore a few hours afterward though, when the wires actually start shifting your teeth. That soreness will last 2-3 days usually.
How long it takes depends on your orthodontist's schedule and what exactly you are having done. (We schedule 1 hr for 1 arch. 1 1/2 - 2 hours for both.)
They will be a little annoying the first few days. They will rub the inside of your lips and cheeks (use the wax if you need to, they will show you how).
You also have to learn to eat a little differently. Avoid hard food, sticky food, don't take large bites (they should cover this with you too).
Brushing is a little trickier too. Make sure that you are removing ALL the food debris and plaque from your teeth when you brush. You should brush every time you eat something, but if that's not possible, at least 3 times a day.
You need to floss also. Superfloss is great, you don't have to thread it through everything, because the end is stiff, so you can just poke it right through. If your contact points are tight to start out then use Glide floss, it's super-thin, so it will slide between your teeth easily.

We all asked that question . OK not really when you get them in there are not pain full but the next day yes the are pain full . But when you get them in your teeth feel like someone but a bar and is now pulling them in . But the pain gos way in 3-5 days , And it is more than pain full . And you can't bite at all with them . And when you do go back in for you check up in 1 or 2 the will put in a new bar and its pain full getting it off because your teeth are so out of place . But then after the first time in does hurt some time , only some time is ok . pain go's way in 3 day or less . Just keep taking pain killers.

I had braces for 3 years. They didn't hurt when I had them put on. It was just a little uncomfortable because your mouth was open for such a long time. The only thing that hurt me was when I got them tightend monthly. I always took tylenol before my appointment and that seemed to help. It only hurts for about a day after you get them tightened. But believe me it is well worth it! Good Luck! There not bad at all!

Yes, Braces DO hurt after you get them on. When I got mine on, I couldn't even chew on a slice of cheese. They hurt really bad the first week. But depending on how bad your teeth are, It might not b 2 bad. I can't remember how long it takes to get them on,sorry! But you get them tightened every month, and that hurts bad, too! Hope this helps!!!! :)

,Yes, unfortunately they do hurt, as they are gradually moving your teeth into the correct alignment. It varies from person to person on how long the pain lasts.
Usually after a few days they stop hurting, but they may hurt as your orthodontist makes monthly adjustments.

they are a bit uncomfty when they are tightened. the spacers they put in before they put on bands are painful too, nothing untolerable though, tylenol will get rid of the pain. it depends how bad yout teeth are. mine were only on for 2 and a half years, but mine were pretty bad, my ortho just wanted to get rid of me lol they hated me i wasnt a good paitent. i didnt like the impressions so i accidently kicked the people :( but if i can do it anyone can! its not that bad nd so worth it

they hurt for about a week when they put them on. u have to cut you food into small bits and swollow it. they hurt if the dentist tightens them about once a month. and if the braces rub against your gum and its reallys sucks.
