Officially, there were 12 apostles, but the number may be raised to 14 if you count the fact that, after Jesus died, the apostles chose Mathias to join them and replace Judas, thus bringing their number back to 12, and Saul of Tarsus aka Paul is often counted with the apostles, being sometimes referred to as the apostle of the gentiles.
