Well, its not mandatory to study Cantonese or Putonhua for
that matter to reside in Hongkong. Its an advantage of course
if you do. Before 1997, british civil servants were encouraged
to study cantonese or hakka for better communication purposes.

Those that are open minded will learn a few practical phrases and daily use words. Beyond that, not many take up cantonese as it deviates much from Mandarin and not all the oral forms can be put into writtings.
LOL, I grew up in HK and after I took a leave of 10 years to study and work aboard, it took me almost 6 months to re-adjust to the language when I returned to take a job there a few years ago.

initially chinese or Hong Kong females are a lot less in all probability than western females to casual date, maximum of them would basically bypass out with a guy in the journey that they experience there will be a relationship. therefore even at the same time as maximum Hong Kong women do not disapprove of western adult men, overseas men who're operating in Hong Kong briefly frequently can not supply the females a experience that they are severe for the longer time period so not many women bypass out with those adult men. The overseas inhabitants in Hong Kong contain both male and woman, western adult men in Hong Kong can really hit upon a western woman buddy. For some motives, many Filipino females operating in Hong Kong finally end up with a western boy buddy and there are countless Filipinos women right here. there is countless competition for chinese women for western adult men.

I wish they did. Unfortunately most of them just plan to get by with the languages they already know. ... Maybe if the govt were to offer a tax cut and free lessons, it would bring about a momentum to become a one-language city.
