When I approach my dog she puts her head down and acts scrared. I've never hit or yelled at my dog or hurt her in anyway. I got her when she was a pup and know the breeder which takes good care of her dogs. I don't understand, she has never been abused or anything so why does she act like this and how can I change it? thx

My shepherd started acting this way--and come to find out that when I was not at home the guy next door was being mean to him--throwing rocks and stuff that was awful--he is a great dog and he has never offered to hurt anyone--but when the kids would play out in the street he would bark and whine because he wanted to play too and have them come over and pet him--so to this day--he sometimes acts shy like that--and we moved when he was just 7 months old and he is near 8 years old--so maybe someone else is abusing your dog--

She may be interpreting your eye contact as confrontational. Staring a dog in the eyes is a hard thing for many dogs to handle, so make a point to not do this when approaching her. Also, turning your body to the side will help her to know that you don't mean her any harm. Letting her approach you, and building a strong history of rewarding her when she comes to you, will help a lot. You sound like you're very observant - watch for her blinking, licking her lips, and yawning - these are all "Chill out, please!" signals that a dog will give when he or she is feeling uncomfortable. Site below will help too. Good luck!

Dogs are similar in personality and as diverse among themselves as people are. I have 4 different unique breeds of dogs in our home. My Boston Terrier is completely nuerotic. She hides every time she hears a loud noise or I raise my voice. That's just the way she is and I love her and want her to deal with her life in anyway she thinks she needs to. @8-)

Just keep showing her love, and don't sweat it. She'll come around. If not bring her to vet and get her eyes checked. She may not be perceiving motion correctly. good luck.
