I know what u mean about the docs! These days, all they do is prescribe something fast without really checking you. In my opinion, they do that just so they can see more patients and make more money for themselves and for the goverment by making patients pay for medication they dont really need! I suggest you go to the pharmacy and by polysporin ear drops or something similar like a combo of ear/eye drops. It works great and it's cheap.

If you have an infection in your inner ear, nothing you put in there will get to it because of the membrane protecting it. If it is bacterial and you decide to do nothing, it will spread to your tonsils. After another couple of weeks or so it will spread to your liver and other organs and could very well be fatal. However, those are only ifs. Certainly the pain will become unbearable if it is a bacterial infection, so you'll know well in advance before it spreads too far. Please cave in and get the antibiotics in that case. It could mean your life. For now, you can try gargling warm salt water. Your eustachian tube connects your throat to your ear and is often the way an infection gets in there. Gargling warm salt water is hard, but try and do the whole glass, which means about five or more spits. You really need to stand over the sink for it, because it decided to come out by itself sometimes. Try and gargle as low in your throat as possible. Do it before you go to bed and don't drink anything afterwards so that the salt stays in your throat. You don't have to make it TOO salty.

They could very well be related. Sharp pains in the ear, obviously, are not a good sign. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.

I had something similar before christmas, no other symptoms except really bad earache. My doctor tries not to put people on antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, so I was told vitamin C and paracetamol at night (when it was worse) but it's worth going to see your GP to make sure you haven't perforated your eardrum

I would go to the doc. If you happen to have an ear infection, you certainly do not want to let it go untreated.
