when you call it in that your card is stolen shouldnt they mark it down so when the person tries to use the card the store clerk will know and then call the police or something

As a cashier for many years, I know for a fact that the when a stolen credit card is used in most stores, it comes up on the network that the card must be picked up, but the cashier is not notified of why. Some cashiers, instead of waiting for the sale to go through AND CHECKING THE IDENTITY OF THE USER, hand the credit card back to the customer before the sale is approved. When the customer is told that the card must be picked up, the customer will say, "Oh, well, I must have grabbed the wrong credit card," and the customer walks away.

Other times, at the "pay at the pump" sites, it is virtually impossible to pick up these cards; they drive off. Also, with the new technology of having the self-swiping machines, the cashier doesn't even touch the card; however, the cashier is really required to check that the signature on the back of the cards matches the signature on the driver's license when the customer is using a Visa or MasterCard credit card. The bank "check cards" aren't treated the same way. I found this out the hard way! It is not required of cashiers to match signatures to check cards.

It is important that those who have lost or stolen cards cancel their cards immediately upon discovery of it being missing. Most credit card companies have the ability to reimburse sales that were not authorized by the user.

Catching the thieves in action is a lot harder than one might think.
