You must first recall that several 'orders' of Judaism exist: Conservative, Reform, Hassidic, etc. Of course a rabbi is expected to play a role as a community leader, but many great rabbis were single. A rabbi is a teacher, an expert on the Torah and Talmud. The kosher laws command Jews to be fruitful and multply, so that is a commandment, so, yes, depending on the orthodoxy of the community, they will expect a married rabbi with children.

It is a mitzvah to marry and have children. Rabbis are very nearly required to be married for two reasons. One is to show a good example to the community by oberserving the mitzvah. The other is so he can relate on a personal level to the members of the congregation, most of whom are married and will come to him for advice.
