Something I always wondered when getting into and elevator. I've never gotten into one that has one of these fancy escape hatches overhead. Does any of the major manufacturers actually produce models with escape hatches. Or is this something that can be bought as an extra option. the expensive hatches overhead and the cheap ones underneath LOL
So is it just hollywood or do such elevators exist.

The reality is elevators do have roof-top access hatches, for rescue or maintenance purposes, but they are intended to be locked from the outside and furthermore are often concealed from the inside. Many cars also have side access doors allowing passengers to transfer to an adjacent car. It's not intended that passengers should get out themselves, instead trained rescuers open the hatches to reach them, they should be safer in the elevator car than trying to negotiate the potential and actual dangers of the shaft. If the hatch is open, then the power should cut off so the car will not move.

There is one place where elevator passengers do have internal access to the roof hatch, a place where a lot of movies are made. Regulations in California, an earthquake zone, require the hatch to opened with a key from inside, and also that the car should still be able to move at reduced speed with the door open. But how often do we see anyone in a movie use this key to open the hatch...
