You need to put something on as soon as your feel the itch.
Zovirax is a prescription topical lotion and it is the best, but you need to get a prescription from your doc, and it isn't the cheapest.
Abreva also seems to work, but you spend a lot of money on that teeny little tube.
Arbonne also sells a topical cream called Herbal Lip Ointment - it's for use with cold sores, and you get a LOT more for your money than with Abreva.
you can buy it here:

There are a few options. 1) Use carmex or Abreva to conceal it and stop/slow the growth, 2) Go to your dentist and he/she can probably prescribe a cream to put on it, 3) Just got to a walk in clinic and ask a general phsycian. I'm sure there are others out there but I have one and I am using carmex. Today my dentist said that he could prescribe a cream if I wanted or that any doctor could. Good luck, cold sores and kanker sores (sp?) can take a while if you don't catch it fast enough.

Keep it moist! Thre are products out there at your pharmacy for cold sores. Abreva is one that I have used in the past. It helps cut the healing time down. In the interim, keep it moist at all times. I know how awful it can be to go through having a cold sore on your mouth, but it will only be for a few days to a week then gone. Good Luck!!

It is caused by one of the herpes virus family, and as a virus, you can't really stop it. However, a number of over-the-counter lip creams like Lipactin ease the situation by acting as a moisturizer and helping prevent the virus from spreading. It'll go in a few days. It seems we never really get rid of the virus - it can flare up again months later once more. I find the key is starting to apply the cream the moment I begin to feel that odd tingling sensation before the sore erupts..

I don't know why it works, it just does. My son gets cold sores and I give him 2 Alka Seltzer in about 4 ounces of water as soon as he thinks he's getting one. Then do it again before bedtime. He does this dose once, maybe twice and then he doesn't get the sore. And it's cheap.

Doctor - quick and get prescription for zovirix cream. Doesn't cost much and at the first tingle - it stops it cold - pun intended. If you actually get one and use the cream it clears up in a couple days instead of a week or more and more.
