I recently went to a restaurant that had "grinders" on the menu. That made me start thinking about the song "Lunch Lady" by Adam Sandler. Which then lead me to ask myself, "is there really a difference between a hoagie, grinder, and a submarine sandwich. If so, what is the difference?"

By the way - I live in Wisconsin, and the restaurant was in Wisconsin. We usually say "subs" here.

no difference. people from different parts of the country call them different things (just like soda versus pop).

I really think it depends on where you live ... or where you are ordering at the moment. I grew up in Northeaster PA and we always called them "hoagies" and then lived in the Boston area for a while and it was the first time I heard of a "grinder" ... Although, sometimes these terms are used in certain locales to delineate between a hot sub and a cold sub ... who knows ...
You say tomato, I say tomato ...
Like the time I was in Boston and someone asked me if I wanted a "pop" and I looked at them like they had seven heads wondering why they were asking me if I wanted them to hit me?
Never heard soda referred to as a pop. Ahhh, youth ... at least we all giggled.
Have an awesome day!!!

subs, heroes and grinders are sandwiches but are on rolls as supposed to sandwich bread. There is no difference between a sub, hero or grinder other than what part of the country you are from

If you saw a grinder on the menu you must have been in Southeastern Connecticut or Rhode Island. Those are the only places that I have ever seen them listed. I don't know that there are really any diffences in ingriedients among the three, it's just local names for the same type of sandwich.

There is no real difference outside of a standard deviation. Obviously not all will be the same, but a sub purchased frm Subway will be a lot diffrent than one purchased from Quiznos. The diffrent names given to that style of sandwich come from the various franchises and branding efforts. Submarine sandwich comes from the Canadian franchise "Mr. Submarine" etc.

Nope, no difference. Just that a hoagie is the correct way to say it and all the others are just wrong.
Get over it!!! LOL!!!
