I use to get bran muffins like this when I lived in the twin cities, and haven't found a recipe to make one like it.

before you pour the mix into the pan sprinkle a small amount of grammcrackers crushed on the bottom or a sprinkle of brown suger both will get crunchy when baked.

I'm just gonna guess here, but it would seem that if you want sweet & crunchy, you'd have to mix brown sugar, bran & butter together, then put a tablespoon of this mixture in the bottom of each muffin before you put the muffin mix on top of it. I don't know if it will really work, but I know it works with other baked items. <*)))><

Sounds like an upside down type muffin. If so, it may of had the bottoms of the muffin pan butterd and layered with brown sugar and crushed almonds or some type of nut. Wait A Minute! Eureka!

Brown sugar and you can do the same for the tops if you like.
