you can eat it if the worm had any germ's on it the tequila killed them ( my brother used to just swallow them )

mezcal is not tequila. Tequila is similar to Mezcal in that they are both products of the agave plant. Mezcal is made only from Blue Agave. It is perfectly harmless to consume the worm.

The adage that the worm will get you actually implies that if you drink tequila (a whole bottle), it's the last shot (which will contain the worm if all goes right) that will knock you off your *** and onto the floor. That's why the worm is "bad" for you.
