According to Wikipedia.com:
A passport is a travel document issued by a national government that usually identifies the bearer as a national of the issuing state and requests that the bearer be permitted to enter and pass through other countries.
Passports are connected with the right of legal protection abroad and the right to enter one's country of nationality. Passports usually contain the holder's photograph, signature, date of birth, nationality, and sometimes other means of individual identification. Many countries are in the process of developing biometric properties for their passports in order to further confirm that the person presenting the passport is the legitimate holder.

Hi, a passport is a document used by countries to track the movement of non citizens within their country. It is not required for travel within any given country by a citizen of that country.

Just country to country -- by January 23rd, everyone travelling out of their own country or over US airspace has to have a passport. It's just my opinion, but I think everyone should have a valid passport at all times whenever they travel anywhere due to the "terrorist threat" these days. Safer for you to have proof of who you are and where you're from!!!

Country to country. It is so Immigrations can keep a check of how many illegals are in a country. Not that it works in the UK. We practically invite illeagals.
