At about 11pm last night, my boyfriend started complaining of a pain in his right shoulder. He told me this morning that it now is a shooting pain and goes from just about his wrist to his jaw. He has had heart problems in the past, and has a family history of hypertension and diabetes. He doesn't have insurance, so he can't "just go to the doctor." He took some pain medication to see if that helps a few minutes ago. If it does help does that mean its not his heart? Should we just go to the ER?

YES! Go to the hospital emergency room. That is definitely a sign of a heart problem. Give him some aspirin if you have it. That will thin his blood slightly if he is having a heart attack.
We also dont have insurance but when it comes to something that is potentially life threatening I know it is worth it to go rather than lose someone and regret having not gone.
You can make $10 payments on the final bill from the ER. I have even had them just absorb the cost of the bill after explaining my financial situation.
Better to be safe, than sorry!!!

Shooting pains from the jaw to the wrist would signal cardiac problems, especially if the underside of his arm experiences the pain as well.
Its possible it is only a pinched nerve, or he slept on his sore shoulder funny, but with a history of heart problems and hypertension he should certainly have it looked at.

It sounds suspisciously like a pinched nerve, as radiating pain from a heart attack "usually" doesn't reach the wrist nor is it a "shooting pain", but if he has a history of heart problems, and is experiencing chest pain, nausea, or any other symptoms of a heart attack, then you really shouldn't take a chance. Take him to the ER just to be safe.

Symptoms of a heart attack include pain in the jaw, all the way down the arm. Go to the ER and worry about payment later.
Have him pop an aspirin before you go.

Heart problems are supposed to be indicated by pains in the left shoulder and left arm, so I'm not sure what the right arm may be an indication of. It could be a pinched nerve in his right shoulder from sleeping on his neck wrong.
Is there any shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness? Those are other heart attack symptoms.

Yes, I had a very similar problem when I took birth control pills. Are you doing that? If not, it is not related, but when I had them I got this problem. I went to the doctor and they did not know what it was, but I never mentioned for them that I took them. So I found out later and have not been taking them since. It went away almost immediately after I stopped, and I know now that I was oversensitive to them. Another possible reason could be anxiety or bad blood circulation. Find out the cause and do not just take painkillers because it may be something serious. I hoped I helped!
