I'm getting married Feb. 9, 2008 and I'm trying to start planning a color scheme. But, I can't decide what to do! We don't want a Valentine's Day themed wedding because we both think its kind of cheesy, even though we're having it right near V-Day. We want to stick with a winter theme...lots of sparkle, white xmas lights, candles, very elegant. I'm thinking of using black, red, silver and white as our colors. What do you all think? Do they go good together? Obviously, I'm going to wear pure white...bridesmaids I'm thinking of putting in black because i love how elegant it is...and I'm thinking red flowers...and lots of silvery decorations. I don't know though....I'm open to anything at this point...tell me what you think for a wintery wedding!

Congratulations! We were just married and had the same colors. I understand the dilema you are going through - our florist wasn't much help - but we found a good linen company that helped us. We didn't want that "red cross/Valentine's" look either. We had our bridesmaids in black - it was color they were all very comfortable in. I had a white dress and we all had deep red flowers. The deep red kept it more elegant than cheesy red. The girls and the flower girls all used sashes around their waists to keep everything uniform. We got these beautiful deep platinum sashes from the linen company - www.dressmychair.com We also used this company to help coordinate the reception too. The dress sashes were only ,75 and made of satin. We had deep red flower bouquets down the aisle and got white chiffon swags and more of the silver platimum sashes for the flowers on the aisle. We put twinkle lights in the chiffon. We also used the same material for the atler. Everything was really cheap to rent from them and just mail back the next day. At the reception, we rented white tablecloths with platimun silver satin overlays - with cylindars of floating candles, little bundles of roses in small silver vases and lots of red rose petals on the table. We used a lighter silver napkin to offset the - party favors (they were a lighter silver) and the plates and everything else was white. We rented their white chaircovers and again the platinum silver ties around the chairs. We almost went with the deep red satin sash or the lighter satin sash- they have so many options and have the BEST prices!!! You could also do black chaircover with a silver sash - very elegant. They will send you samples to play with. Everything was beautiful, romantic and didn't look so red and white!!!
Good luck!

I agree with VDay being cheesy. But since you both are really against VDay theme, I wouldn't use bright red. Maybe more of a wine or crimson, something slightly darker. Then you can use white roses if you want the bouquets a lil lighter. Also, white and silver seem to cancel each other out. I would use white or silver, not both. Unless you meant like white for flowers, silver for decorations. Black, Red and white is a very french look and very pretty together. But since you want that sparkle, I'd go with silver. I love black as a bridesmaids dress and so will your bridesmaids. It's so slimming! and as its so elegant, definitely something they can wear again.
I love the winter theme--sparkle and elegant will be beautiful. Mirrors on the table to reflect the candles. Oh it sounds gorgeous. But 4 colors is a bit hard to manage. 2 is the norm b/c then others can notice your color scheme and it can be used for showers/ engagement parties/ bachelorette parties where as 4 gets too difficult. especially if they hear its "red and white"--I can see others taking that to mean VDay theme.
One last note, I dont know what kind of reception hall you have but as they tend to be very white, I think the black tableclothes would make it very elegant.
You seem very sure of yourself though so there is no real reason to ask us! You have picked gorgeous colors that go wonderfully together. You know what flowers you want and what color decorations. When you meet with some people, you might have to change some things around slightly--but either way. Set your vision and stick with it. Trust me--someone is gonna tell you they hate that and you should go with more spring-like pastels. You do what you want--cause its gonna be your wedding pictures up in your house.
Good luck!

Your theme sounds beautiful. You're right about a Valentine's Day themed wedding being cheesy. Don't overdo the silvery decorations, though. Keep the colors very toned down and you will have a gorgeous and elegant wedding.
Just another idea, plum and silver are also really pretty for winter and you can put in some whites there (flowers).
Good Luck and Congratulations!!!

I have loved the red and black color combination since I was about 6 years old. I think I saw a kitchen designed in the colors at Furrows or something, but I fell in love. I decided then and there that when I get married I want those colors. The funniest thing was that about 2-3 years after I made that decision, I attended a distant cousin's wedding who had those same colors. (And by total coincidence, I was wearing a dress of the same colors.) I still love the color combination, but when I do get married, I think I'm going to skip the bridesmaids and all that. (I like the idea of just me and my honey on a secluded beach more...)
Red flowers pretty much go with anything. I like the idea of the silver accents...gold doesn't really go with this color scheme too well...

That sound beautiful. My cousin had us wear black dresses for her wedding and we had red flowers. I think that wedding colors should only be two- such as black and red. Then have white and sivler be your accenting colors in decoration. I am getting married in March of this year and my color is Latte and Champagne (based on my bridesmaids dresses) but for decorations I am using alot of white. The girls flowers are going to be peach or violet, but these colors will just accent the bolder colors.
I really like the idea of a winter themed wedding- if i were doing this i would use lots of white lights and then if you were going to go with red- for the centerpieces I would fill the vases with red apples, or a bold orchid and then coordinate the flowers to that. There is alot of fun things you can do with a winter wedding!
Best of luck to you and I am sure the day is going to be beautiful no matter what colors you choose!

You ideas are really good. Black is timeless, red is classy, and silver is a great winter wedding color. Yes a VDAY them would be way to cheesy. Your wedding already sounds elegant. Use lots of white lights and candles for lighting. That would be elegant and romantic. Also use lots of red rose petals. Roses are timeless and romantic. You could have red rose petals scattered on the floor and the tables and have mirrors and candles on the reception tables. Also the reception tables should have black table cloths and the chairs should have red covers and black sashes. At the altar you could have candles lighted and have two beautiful red rose arrangements. In the aisle you could have candles and red roses scattered. Your wedding sounds scheme sounds awesome. These are all just my opinions but I could picture it when you told me your colors. I think I might be a wedding planner one day.

Dont use red and white is a bad combination. Use Silver and White even Baby blue this are the colors that represent winter. They make agreat combination. Black is elegant but for a wedding not a great choice. Have your maid of honor and best men ware silver and the rest of the bridal party Baby blue. It will look great. Have fun and congratulations.

congratulations on your engagement :)
personally i dont like the colour scheme.. i like the white and black but not with the red and silver.. its just a bit obvious and doesnt look as good as you might think!
if i were you.. (obviously you dont have to take my ideas since it is your wedding lol!).. id wear a pure white dress with a lot of volume in the skirt.. that would look so magical.. and to contrast have your bridesmaids wear fitted silky black dresses..
other colour that i would suggest putting with the black and white would be silver (but without the red!), red (but without the silver!).. but my favourite would have to be a lovely fuschia colour.. this way you could incooperate it in perhaps some lily bouquets and centre pieces..
love the idea of having all the fairy lights and candles and stuff! :) just please please please do not have all the 4 colours together.. they are all so bold and strong that they compete for attention and gives a tacky effect!
have a lovely wedding x

I would say your colors are beautiful.......... but they are more of an evening wedding if you are dressing the bridesmaids in black. Day weddings don't usually have black or red.
If it is going to be a day wedding.. consider white / silver and ice blue. Baby / ice blue is a beautiful winter color.

What time of day is your wedding? If it's a nighttime (and pretty formal) wedding, all of this sounds lovely. If it's daytime, I would steer clear of black dressed - they are much more appropriate for an evening wedding. Red flowers would be lovely.
