I got my yorkie about 1 month ago, and he is 4 months old. Since we got him we have been trying to pad train him, and it was working fine until about 5 days ago. In front of us he goes to the pad, but when left alone he goes everywhere but the pad. sometimes when the pad is changed he will pee there but go poop somewhere else, help me!!!!

I successfully trained my Yorkshire terrier to only use doggie pads.
The first step is find an area that you can contain the dog using fencing. Cover the entire area with the pads or newspapers. Each day remove a small section of the papers so that you start narrowing the area that you want them to use. This will work very quickly. Unfortunately you do have to keep the dog contained in the area most of the time until you can get them trained. You can let them out to play, but if you sense they need to go to the bathroom get them back to their contained area quickly.
I would also reward my dog with little treats whenever she went to the bathroom on her own in the correct place. That was a big motivator for her. I had her for fourteen years and she never went to the bathroom anywhere except in her designated area.
To do this successfully you also can’t expect the dog to go outside to the bathroom. It will confuse them and they will never successfully get the idea that they have their own bathroom.
You can use a large flat plastic pan to cover with papers for the bathroom or a large cat litter box. This would make the cleanup easier for you. There have been some people who use cat litter successfully for their dogs. I liked using the papers.
If you have any further questions please let me know.

Smaller dogs are harder to train, but you need to follow some simple steps. You need to buy a crate for him, and it needs to be large enough so he can get up and turn around, but not too large. You keep him in the crate unless you are home to supervise him. Puppies need to go often so don't keep him in the crate but a couple of hours at a time. When you let him out of the crate you should take him outside right away, and say go potty or pee pee, but say the same thing everytime. While you can supervise him, keep him out of the crate. But if you leave, put him back, but take him outside again right before you put him in the crate. Eventually he will understand that potty time is when you first take him out of the crate, but stay out long enough for him to do his "business" Also, feed and water him only when you are there to supervise. Eventually as he gets older you will not have to crate him, he will learn to potty outside, but just like a baby get him on a schedule. Yokies are sweet loving dogs, take special care and he will love you for it. :) Good luck!

Very difficult to housebreak and it won't happen in one week especially if she's already 7 1/ months old. Using the crate is a wonderful way to house train when used correctly. She should be let out of the crate, taken directly outside and when she goes potty, praised and given a treat. If she doesn't go, she gets put back into the crate and let back outside in another 30 minutes. It will take a lot of work on your part but you have to stick to it.

Maybe he couldn't make it to the pad in time! Or it could be that he doesn't know to pee on it unless his pee on the pad already is a reminder! It's kind of hard to give training tips on the Internet, but I have a book that I used to train my dogs with. It worked very well, apparently, because they never poop or pee in the house. The book is called the ASPCA Complete Guide to Dogs.
I think maybe you should just use newspaper to train him, it's less messy. You should also get him outside and get him used to your neighbourhood and stuff.

I have had puppies many times and I have always used a crate to train them. When you can't be with pup 100% of time, put it in the crate. Whenever you take it out, take it outside. I use crates all the time. My dogs go in whenever I want them too. It is their safe place. All I have to say is get in your house and they go. THey are crated when I am not home.
You can train a pup in about 4 days if you are consistant.

If he is doing this when you are gone, then make his area small when you're not home.Put him in a crate with the pad, he'll do his business. He is 4 months, so you need to get him over the accidents as soon as you can. They have a spray at Walmart that will get him to go on the pad too.Hope this helps......

Regi has the key.. you have to be consistent. The only thing I would add to what she said is don't leave the puppy in a crate for 8 hours a day. If you can't let her out see if a friend can let her out during the day. Good luck.
