In movies, when a person is unconcious and they are woken up by the bad guy snapping something into their nose, is that bad for the person's health?

It's merely a small capsule filled with ammonia. After the inner tube is broken, the ammonia saturates a small bit of cotton at the end of the outer tube. It is horribly pungent, but mostly harmless. It's just gently wafted under the nose. Although a big whiff would make one's nose run and eyes water a bit, and a long exposure to a concentrated amount would irritate the mucous membranes and respiratory system, there are no lasting effects from its use as a "smelling salt".

That is an amonia capsule. It is just a rather strong odor and does tend to wake people up. There is little, if any harm to the person affected.
