Fry some mushrooms in some oil and garlic. Then add some double cream. Heat the cream through and use to top the steak.
Makes a nice sauce.

As a sauce for the steak u should make a diane sauce (Fresh mushrooms in gralic, wine etc) or maybe a peppered sauce. OR just a plain old lemon on the side to squeeze. Then the sauteed potatoes are great. I wouldnt put peas and tomatoes. Id go more for some nice carrots cooked in orange sauce (just squeeze some juice and rind and add a little bit of ginger). If you then want another side dish maybe u can try Vegetable friiters, i love those. u boil some cauiliflower, corn and carrots (or basically any veg u like) and make a batter with eggs and flour, peper and salt etc etc and u mix with the veg, make nice shapes and deep fry...delicious. Good luck!

If you really want to impress him, stay away from the things that he would get by eating out i.e. chips, sauteed pots and plain fried mushrooms. Get some rocket, lambs lettuce & watercress & make a salad from that with nice fresh vine tomatoes. Proper jacket potato cooked in the oven (don't do micro ones they are not as good) garlic butter mushrooms & french green beans, he will love you forever with that & will see that you have his health at heart as well as the treats on his plate. Hope you have a lovely evening

Peas? I would avoid the peas, mushrooms and grilled or roasted tomatoes sound great though. You could do a salad if you wanted to keep to cold 'veg' or how about baby corn on the cobs and mange tout or onion rings? A good bottle of wine or beer if that's what he would prefer and a simple pudding. Sounds yummy so good luck.

I'd lose the peas and the tomatoes. Make the mushroom, cream and garlic sauce as suggested by another poster, and serve with salad dressed with Pizza Express dressing (available at Sainsburys etc) mixed with some fresh parmesan and some crushed garlic to make a dead simple Caesar dressing.

Does he like surf & turf? Then run to the store grab a bag of jumbo or large frozen shrimp. Take home thaw ; it is alread deveined for you. Place ice in a glass or small dish w/wide rim , in the center of that you will place a sauce cup filled with cocktail sauce. Place shrimp around the rim or glass surrounding the sauce cup. The ice in the bowl will keep it fresh. Place a twist of lemon and a sprig of parsley for garnish.
With the remaining shrimp make shrimp scampi.

Do a pepper sauce :- get some FINELY chopped onion or shallot, sweat them off in a little butter, add a little white wine/brandy then some whipping or double cream finish with either pickled green peppercorns ( from Sainsburys etc - rinse them before use!) or crushed black peppercorns

How bout herbed oatmeal bread? It takes a little extra time because it is a yeast bread...but you are aiming to impress so this is good! It is a very soft yummy bread that you can make in a 9 by 13 cake pan or casserole dish. The parm cheese, herb, and butter topping makes it smell like pizza when it is cooking.
