It's very nice that you have opted to join the Army. For this if you are already a graduate then you can apply for CDS exam (Combine Defence Service Exam) which is held twice a year, if you manage to clear it then you will be called for SSB (Service Selection Board), again if you pass this exam which is held for 4 days with various avtivities then only you will get commission as Lieutenant. But if you are not a graduate then you can opt for NDA (National Defence Acadmy). These exams are bit difficult but don't think that you can't do it ... if you wished to become a good soldier then take it as a given mission and start preparation right away... fight till you succeed. I would like to suggest you one thing that talk to any military officer (on service and or retired) you know and ask them regarding all this and especially for SSB, you can also buy book on CDS/NDA exam and SSB as it is available in all good book stores. Check out the contents of the SSB book and i am sure you will start preparing for it very soon, hire a good tutor to guide you and help you prepare for your exam...Good luck to you my friend............

In my opinion and experience, if you want to go in the Army, it is best if you enlist first and then after your 1st tour, apply for Green to Gold or OCS, that way you will know what it is like to be at the bottom of the pile. Don't get me wrong, I have met some very fine military officers that came straight out of school. But you can always tell those who were enlisted first. But either way you go you will have my support... Good luck

I was enlisted, spent a couple of years as enlisted, than went to OCS. You need to have at least 90 credit hours at an accredited college to go to OCS and finish your bachelors in order to become an captain. You can go green to gold, where you go to college and ROTC, (while in college) and you are an officer when done. Officers basically get paid more and are in charge of the army, while NCO's and enlisted soldiers do the day to day operations of the Army. Officers set policy and oversee. OCS is fun, like basic training but you are treated much better.
