I currently own a Canon Powershot S1 IS camera, 3.2 megapixels, 10x optical zoom, capable of 640x480 video w/ sound.

I recently stumbled upon the Canon S2 IS, the next generation update to the S1, for a seriously reduced clearance price at Sears (where i also receive a 10% discount). I bought the last 2, thinking I could sell at least one of them at a profit, but then I got to thinking, I should sell my old S1 in favor of the newer model. The S2 has got 5.0 MP, with a 12x optical zoom, and improved movie mode with stereo recording audio.

Bottom line, I picked up the S2 for $222.99. Rock bottom solid. Problem is, I love my S1 so much and it has been so problem-free that I don't know if I should risk going to the next model.

Furthermore, the S3 is now entering the market, but is still way out of my price range. Do you think S2 would be the best value? I've heard it can be buggy/problemous, should I even bother upgrading? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Go here and read the review of the S3.

It says that the S2 was a big step above the S1, but the S3 is a "minor upgrade" to the S2. 'Nuff said.

But, if you are terminally curious, read on down the page where they compare the S2 and S3 and tell you what's new and improved.

My daughter has had her S2 since last summer (2006) and has not had any problems with it so far. Well, she did let someone mess with her camera and they set it in some sort of active auto-focus mode, if that makes sense to you. I think it must be for fast moving subjects. Once we turned that off, she was happy again.

I have been running the S2 IS for more that a year with thousands of pictures and many hours of high quality video. I run only the highest resolution and have a 2GB card with a 512MB backup. I have had no problems thus far. I love this camera, but as things progress I am considering the S3 IS. No decision made yet. No experience with the S1 IS but the S2 IS is well worth the money, especially for $223. You won't be disappointed.

the important distinction between the Canon Powershot Sx10 IS and the Canon Powershot Sx20 IS is that the Sx20 IS has a extra ideal video characteristic. yet I say in case you want video purchase a camcorder! So the Canon Powershot SX10IS is my in demand (in case you'll hit upon one). The Canon Powershot SX30 IS has an prolonged zoom lens and that i concern that one could use a tripod each and anytime possible in spite of lens stabilization.
