My dog hasn't been neutered and he keeps whinning at my door to be let out. There must be a b*tch on heat where we live and he wants her BIG TIME. He jumped my fence the other day and fell 20 ft to the ground. Please don't tell me to get him neutered as he's 8 and too old. He's a cross ridgeback......

Can I just add that I wanted him neutered but my vet told me he was too old when I took him after his acrobatics the other day....

It is never "too late" to neuter your dog. Neutering him now may not cure all of the behaivors that he has learned (like humping). But it will eliminate the all-consuming drive that he has now to mate. This obsession is hormone based and if you get rid of the hormone making organs...then you will eliminate this unwanted drive.
Ok...now that I've said it, here are your other options.
Your dog will never stop this behaivor. It is the flip side that you have to deal with if you choose not to neuter/spay your pet. However you can ensure that your dog stays confined and does not harm himself.
When you let him out into the yard, ensure that he is tethered on a leash that is long enough to get out in the grass to do his business, but not so long that he can reach the fences/perimeters. You don't want him being on a leash and then climbing the fence just to hang from his collar on the other side. If you ensure that he is safely kept in your yard...you'll help keep him from getting hurt and from mating with your neighbors unaltered female.
If you are close with your neighbor, maybe you could talk to them and work out a schedule so that the dogs aren't outside at the same time. This will reduce the amount of pheromones that your dog is responding to. (And also reduce the chance that their dog will get pregnant and them having to deal with a litter of mutt puppies).
Good luck and please reconsider neutering your dog. Unless you are using him as a show dog...then there really isn't any reason not to do it.

Not only is he not 'too old' to neuter, you will be 1. possibly saving his life in the short term by him not jumping to his death or being hit by a car, drinking antifreeze, etc. while roaming 2. saving his life & avoiding a lot of other medical problems when he gets testicular cancer or protastitis (most older unneutered dogs WILL suffer with this) in a few years.
C'mon, you know the REAL answer...quit anthropomorphising & make the apppointment. It won't bother your dog nearly as much as it obviously bothers you!

The best answer is to get him fixed. Talk to your vet, just because he is old doesnt mean he can not be fixed. Rescues do it everyday. If you insist that he can not be fixed, then I insist that you get an invisiable fence or shock collar. You need to keep him in your yard or the other dog's owner will not be happy with you (to say the least)

Buy him a muzzle so you cant hear him whine. Your right hes too old to get neutered now that should have been done years ago

sorry - neutering is the only way - i don't know if he's too old, but it really should have been done a long time ago for his safety and his health as well as to control the pet population.
good luck

You have two choices...neuter him or deal with it. If he senses a female in heat, he's going to get all worked up. IT'S NATURE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

There is only TWO ways to get him to stop.
1. Get him neutured (which you can't).
2. Let him have the b**ch, which would be detrimental to the already overpopulated dog community.
You just have to deal with it.

he isn't too old,,, is it so cruel to not do it...remember,, taking the sex drive away from a dog who isn't going to have sex is doing him a great favor,,, if he isn't too old to fall 20ft.. he isn't too old to neuter.
