you shouldn't pierce your belly button yourself, and I find it hard to believe that your parents told you to do it, when you go to get your belly button professionally pierced, they do alot of prepping to make sure they get it just right, they determine which type, a, b, or c, of belly button you have and where it should be pierced. It's not as simple as piercing your own ears.

Baby you are 12 and as a doctor I would advise you that your body has not finished growing yet. Maybe you should wait a few years. I know its a big fad at this time and every 12 year old wants it because they need to all express their individuality by looking like every one else, but If you want it to be best you should wait a few years. If you still want to, I can't stop you, but try to use some common sense about it. You run a risk of infection and other secondary problems, but if done right using aseptic technique these can be overcome. My biggest suggestion is to wait until your body approximates adult shape and size. In most females this is older than 12. Just a thought, but what if you get fat and the ring doesn't sit in your belly button anymore? Just give it a few years for aesthetic reasons if nothing else! Also let a professional do it, don't do it at home. Good Luck!

It's not safe to do home piercings, especially in areas that change as you get older. You are better off asking a certificied piercing shop what the age requirement is and their price. Where I live the basic price is $25 for a common piercing. The problem with at home piercings is that you don't have the training to get it positioned right and a shop will use a hollow needle to remove the material where as a regular needle would just push it aside and then you run the risk of massive infection. It's hard to beleive that your parents would suggest you doing it on your own ...
A small addition to the person below my answer: You can NOT sterilize a needle in a home setting. It takes 400 degrees and being previously contained before use. Which is why a shop always uses a new needle for everything.

YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER SELF PIERCE unless you are trained in what you are doing. No responsible and civil minded parent would encourage you to do such a risky thing.
On top of increasing risk for infections, you don't know where exactly a navel piercing should be placed. So you are at a risk for hurting yourself and causing rejection and bad scarring. Also, I don't think you know about proper jewelry material, gauge and length. Do you know how to clean it? And what if something goes wrong? How will you know what to do? You probably won't.
I suggest you and your parents grow up because I hope to God you really don't do this. If you really want it done, you will be smart enough to have a professional piercer do it and wait until you are old enough to handle the responsibility.

you cant.... you could do alot of serious damage.. you dont know the proper sized jewelry. to accomidate for swelling. you dont knwo what kind of neelde to use. you dont knwo the placement. you don tknow if you have the proper anatomy. meaning is it suitable for your navel? do you know abotu migration and rejection? you will be alot more prone to these since tyou are young and when you hit puberty and grow taller and get your hips your body is gong to change drastically... causing your jewelry to migrate or reject. do you know the proper aftercare? no! rubbing alcohol and hydrogner peroxide or ointments liek neosporin are not suitable for any piercings... how do you know you wont pierce to deep and hit a muscle? and if you pierce so shallow it will reject..
this is why thre are professionals out there! if your parents said you could they would take you to a professional piercer. but they wouldnt even touch you in the first place since you are still young and growing.. they know ud be more at risk for rejection and migration... wiat 4 more years and ask again...
you also do not know the proper sterilizatoin techniques. im sure you dont have a machine called autoclave in your house... and not boiniing a needle in water or usuing rubbing alcohol is only sanitizing. not sterilizing..
you dont know what they hell you are doing so leave it alone. let alone you are just asking for an infection,,,

Sweetie, I think it's a really bad idea to do this yourself! You are risking infection or real damage to yourself, you could end up poking a hole in your stomach or abdomen, which could be life threatening. How about waiting till you can afford to have a professional do it. I'm sure your parents didn't mean for you to actually do it yourself. Take care.

you cant! that would be dumb. and your parents are stupid for saying that to you. obviously they dont care about you getting an infection, bc u deffinetly will. you dont have the right tools to do it out of your own house. tell your parents to show some more care and take u to get it done! its like 20 bucks and if you take care of it properly you wont get any infections.
