He is trying out a dairy free diet as he used to have a continual runny nose and cough with his astma and I am concerned that he is now not getting enough calcium.

Just make sure he is taking a mulit-vitamin. There are a lot of calcium enriched foods out there...bread, orange juice, etc... Also, tofu has a good amount. Check out this list. It will get you started.

Dairy is not a great source of calcium anyway as it doesn't have the right ratio of magnesium to calcium to facilitate absorbtion. Broccoli, almonds, tinned salmon and sardines (eating the bones as well) are good sources of calcium. The good bacteria in our guts facilitate the absorbtion of calcium so it would be a good idea to supplement with probiotics and prebiotics to ensure he gets the most out of what he is eating. Might as well take a clcium supplement as well if you think he is not getting enough.

The quick answer would be vitamins and calcium suppliments. Greens might help too. There are other foods too, but I'm going to have to think to get you a list.

Good luck to your son!
