MY father, step father, two brothers and my husband all stayed in beyond their 20 year mark. It's really quite a personal decision, though. If you absolutely hate being in the Army, then no, by all means, get out. If it's something you can see yourself doing until you hit the 20 year mark, then stay in. It's a secure job, a steady paycheck, and there are so many opportunities to take advantage of.

That's entirely up to you. If you are in a good MOS and are getting good promotion opportunities, then stay in for the long haul. I put twenty years in the Air Force. The retirement pay covers the house and car payments.

Sure. There's nothing wrong with getting money for waking up every morning after 20 years of service... then getting another job with the skills you learned in the Army and making some mad cash.

Look at it this way... if you were 19 when you enlisted, you get out at 39 with a nice fat pension.... and you still have the rest of your life to enjoy it.... then when you hit 62 you get another $1000 or so a month SS. That sure makes for a nice retirement, and you very soon forget those 20 years.... if you survive.

It depends on your long term goals...

If you are looking for a secure job, good benefits, retirement - by all means the military is great. But you also have to remember that being in the military, you are committed to be shipped to wherever there is a need - including remote assignments away from your family and friends.

I've know some who have done their 20 years and retired. As they contributed to their education program, went to school and got their degree. The only downside was that finding something that was not entry level for their age (39) was difficult.

I think that the military is a great option for those who graduate from high school and haven't decided exactly what they want to do with themselves. The military helps install self discipline and confidence in yourself. It can be a great stepping stone to a great career.

For myself, I was in the USAF for over 9 year. After my last tour I opted out and went back to school. From there I have pursued a career in graphics for the last 20 years. I found when I went back to school, my military training assisted me in getting my assignments done ahead of due dates, whereas my other classmates were struggling to meet them.

So, it depends on what you want to do - do you want the security and restrictions of military life or do you just want to take advantage of the training and education benefits that you can take with you into the civilian world.

If you are like my eldest son - I say, by all means yes (as he needs direction). If you are like my youngest, I'd say no (as he is more of a free spirit). My suggestion is to weigh all the available options, ask yourself what you want and follow your inner voice.

Good Luck.

Well... How many years into it are you? How old were you when you first joined? My father was 17 when he joined the military. He put in his 20 years and retired out at 37. Not only did he get a great pension, but he was still young enough to start another career. So not only does he get a great pension, he gets a great paycheck too.

20 years is a drop in the bucket. If you have a better alternative and are not close to 20 years, say over 10 years then stay in but if you have less than 10 then think about it.

If your intention is to be a siiiiit kicker for the whole time then NO!,

if you intend to progress and teach younger soldiers coming through and get some rank on your arm then go forward and have a great a rewarding life, you will march out with some excellent benefits.

Well that is a question that only you can answer. you should take into account what you would do if you got out. Do you have college, what kind of job would you be able to get once you got out and with what pensions and so on. Do you like the millitary life style? Can you handle all of the deployments. How much time do you have in? Do you have a family and if so what do they thik about it? These are all questions that you have to answer yourself. Once you get the answers to these then you can answer your own question.

That's a decision only you can make after exploring the options.

My grandson is "doing his twenty" in the Air Force.

My personal opinion...yes, stay in. The benefits are phenomenal.
