Kids his age need 10-11 hours of sleep everynight. If he has to get up at 7 for school, then send him to bed at 8 or 8:30, sometimes it takes a few minutes for kids to get settled down enough to fall asleep, you could let him pick out a book to read. If he gets up earlier, send him to bed earlier. If he sleeps in a little on weekends, let him stay up a little later.

Parenting is about compromise and having a united front with your children. Your husband thinks 9:30, you think 8:00 - make bed time at 8:30. Remind your husband that children don't go to sleep immediately when you put them to bed anyway. A 9:30 bedtime could actually end up being 10:00 to 10:30 before your child actually goes to sleep.

9:30 is a bit too late, IMO, but it depends on how many children you have in the house. If your bedtime routine starts at 9:30 then you are in for trouble eventually. Start the routine around 8:00 so that he's at least in bed by 8:30.

For our son at 6- we used 8pm as the bedtime. On weekends we let him pick one night to stay up an extra hour.
Now that he's 7 he gets to stay up til 830. But most night he's ready to sleep by 8pm.
930 is too late for a six year old. Our school starts at 730 and assuming a 630 wake up time would mean your child only gets 9 hours of sleep. At age 6 they need at least 1o hours up to 12 hours per night. yes, children can appear to be fine on less sleep, but they can not function at the proper level to learn.
Working with my son's classes the past two years, I have had a lot of experience with this age group and can tell you that the kids that don't get enough rest really show it the next day.
Ask your pediatritian to back you up!
Best Wishes!

That's a matter of personal opinion...but times have changed, you know? It would depend on, really, what you want...and you and your husband should be able to compromise on this subject. If you feel like it gives you more personal time, by putting him to bed earlier, then by all means, it's ok. It would also depend on when he has to get up....if I put my daughter to bed at 8:00 then she would be up by 4 am.....NO WAY!!! I think it depends on you AND your child. Some kids can handle a later bedtime then others.

I agree, I have seven kids, and all five that live at home have a bedtime. It all really depends on what time you get up at,we have an early start 6.30am and i have kids that really really need their sleep but I would say a quarter to eight. My kids bedtimes are as follows;
17months-7.15pm
3&5-In bed at 7.15pm,asleep by 7.30pm
12-in bed 8.15pm,asleep by 8.40pm
14-in bed by 8.45pm asleep by 9.15pm
Obviously I am talking roughly around these times. My two older kids go to bed quite early for their age but this is due to a number of things;
Alone time for myself and my husband and the fact that we have experimented with later times and they were falling asleep in the car on the way to school and we ended up putting them to bed at eight the next evening because they were so cranky. Even at the weekend they are in bed by 10pm and 10.30pm.
You really have to do what works for you but I would say 9.30 for a six year old is too late.

anywhere from 7pm through 8 - 830. Children need their sleep and just as important parents need their down time. Find a time that is comfortable for you and still reasonable for him. Remember do not wait for him to get tired as he will stay up as long as possible. IF you are having trouble getting him tired by 8:30. Then 7pm needs to be funtime. Run him around play hard and fast he will wear out pretty quick (WARNING - this behavior can be hard to unlearn as he gets older and it will take more and more time to wear him out. It is not recommended as the best way to wear out a child)

8 or 8:30...That gives them a full nights sleep to get up for school the next day.
