My husband lives in another city, and we see each other every 2 months. In one of my trips to meet him, I took our little 3 years old daughter with me. She saw us kissing each other in the lips, not a long kiss, just a "hello" one, and, since that minute, she is always telling me "mommy & daddy kiss each other with their open mouths". This is driving me crazy. I have tried to explain her that this is normal for adults to show their love that way, but I'm not sure if she understands me, and sometimes, she even tries to kiss me in the mouth. How can I handle this situation. Help me, pls. Desperate mom.

I understand not wanting your child to kiss you with her mouth open. My son does it sometimes when he's kissing me in a hurry and it's a little odd, but i dont understand why you wouldnt want her to kiss you on the lips? She's not too old at all. Once she doesnt want to do it anymore she'll be too old. She wont be 15 doing it. =) When a child wants to kiss you it means that she feels love and knows what love is and wants to express to you that she loves you. My son kisses me all the time and when he thinks he has hurt me by accident or hurt my feelings he comes up and kisses both of my cheeks and then my lips. I didnt teach him this he just started doing it. His dad and I hug and kiss in front of him but we dont do anything innapropriate. And I think it is fine for him to do the same. Good for you for being such a loving mommy that your daughter has picked up on it and wants to show you. Just tell her that only adults kiss with open mouths. If she doesnt get it tell her that its something you get to do when you're 17 years old and 14 days or something.. Make up a specific rule so she'll think it's for real. And if you dont want her to kiss you on the lips because you think its weird then make up a special kiss for her and you- like a kiss on the nose and then a kiss on each cheek. something that will be special for her and you when she wants to tell you she loves you. She wants to be just as special as daddy and thats wonderful that she feels like she is.

I guess I don't see the big deal. She made a connection and she's proud of it. It's good for children to see their parents acting lovingly toward each other. I think you are overreacting a bit. She knows it's normal, if Mommy does it, it must be normal, right? Just say "that's right honey, mommy loves daddy, daddy loves mommy and everybody loves baby".

It's perfectly ok to me. Tell her it's an expression of affection. Just when you kiss her, let her know you love her so much and therefore you kiss her. Just like how much you love daddy and that's y u kiss daddy :D
My kids do kiss me on my lips. If one day theu try to kiss me like adult do french kissing, i'll just explain that's not the right way to kiss. or perhaps not the right way for kids to kiss.

First, I agree with the first post, kids need to see their parents acting lovingly towards each other, however, I see your dilemma. I would tell her that when people get married, they kiss each other on the lips because they love each other and miss each other. Tell her that people who love each other and who are not married kiss on the cheek or head. That way she will kiss you on the cheek or head and she will also learn that it is inappropriate for her to kiss anyone on the mouth. That's what I do to my kids.

since children imatite adults you just might have to, realize that is the way she thinks people kiss. you might need to curb your kissing infront of your daughter and settle for a peck. also include your daughter in the "peck" style of kissing.
