I haven't done hair much.I have colored my own with a cap and trimmed it but thats about it. Do most people that start school love doing hair and are good at it w/out a license? I really want to try it.

I just started cosmetology school a little over a month ago. I've worked at a salon as the desk manager for over 6 years and finally decided to bite the bullet.
I had never done much with my own hair (I have naturally curly hair, so I never even blow-dried it), so I was a little apprehensive that I wouldn't be any good at it. I know several stylists, obviously through the salon I work at, as well as several friends and my mom and uncle are both stylists. At least half of them claim to had little to no natural talent when starting school and that all they know now was learned both in school and after school through personal experience. So don't feel like you have to be awesome at it before even going to school. I have surprised myself with what I've been able to accomplish in school - and it's all a matter of paying attention and following instructions.
I also want to recommend a school to you. I'm not sure where you are located, but if you're on or near the East Coast, definitely check out Empire Beauty School. They have recently branched out to Illinois as well (I attend their newest school in Lisle, IL). Over the next few years, they hope to open up several more schools throughout the country. Newer schools will be better than older ones, since they'll have the most modern equipment (some schools can be ANCIENT!)
So good luck!!!

It helps if you have a deep desire to help people with their looks. If you can look at someone and say I know what I could do to improve their beauty...In reality, beauty school is not easy. There is book learning, chemistry (for mixing colors, perms), actual hands-on experience and all the mannequin work that must be performed. Also remember that you may not make a lot of money at first. You will need to have a sterling reputation and that takes time. I am not trying to rain on your parade, I just want you to be absolutely sure before you make a committment. Best wishes!!

Yes. That is the best thing I have done in my life. Then if you get tired of that profession. You have something to fall back on. Always keep your license up though. I highly recommend going. It is a lot of fun. And you get to experiment with colors. That was the best part of going to school. It takes time to fell you are great at cutting and coloring hair. GOOD LUCK to you
