to tribes they do or did mean something. but to the average person who has one... no. they probably just got it because it looked cool. or tough or whatever. in my opinion, unless you are actually from an ancestry of people with a tradition of tribal tattooos then you should NOT get tribal anything. it's just dumb.

Most of the people who have "tribal" tattoos are NOT actually members of a tribe, nor do they have any ancestors that were, either.
Some think it is a disgrace to people who do get tribal tattoos because they are in a tribe, or have relatives who were...
Most people get it because they think it is "trendy."
It's rather unfortunate, really.

It really depends on who you are. Some people get them simply for aesthetics. In short, they look cool. However, some people are indeed members of a tribe and they are representing that tribe through tattoos. Many cultures use tattoos to denote certain places in society, genealogy, even history. Sometimes, it is a test of strength and courage. Some people get them because they visited someplace and wanted one as a souvenier (i.e.- Hawai'i, New Zealand, Easter Island, etc.). It's really all about personal preference. Have fun!

I think that if it actually has meaning to you (ie - you're in the tribe of the tattoos that you're wearting) then it's ok....but I personally don't really like them that much if they have no meaning to the person. Just my personal opinion.
I feel the same way about people that put Chinese characters on themselves and have no clue what they mean. My roomate met some guy back when we were in college that had this whole sentence tattooed on his back that he thought it was his name but it wasn't. =D

it is a style of tattooing. it is a reflection or imatation of tribal tattooing. it is an art. nothing more-- you don't have to be part of a tribe, you just have to want pretty boy tattoos.
i don't like tribal tattoos, especially on girls and i think they are only for pretty boys or preppy boys who don't want to "ruin their image". so please don't get one if that is where you are going with this.
