I am no boxer but I tell you that the boxing sport is not like a couple of japanese heavyweight wrestlers that look at each other for a few seconds and then rush at each other. a couple of middleweight boxers are trained to move around the ring and duck dodge swerve feint and sidestep. The sidestepping probably was used to an apononent who slowed down a little and was given a hard punch to the ribs and a crashing righthanded blow to the jaw and then clinch the match.

Boxers side step to get out of the way of punches, but most importantly it puts them in good position to counter punch and throw punches at angles usually to keep a bigger stronger guy off balance. Nobody wants to trade punches with a stronger guy. Side stepping helps you avoid doing that. Say you go in, side step a punch, throw a few jabs and crosses at different angles and then get back out. Keeps the other guy guessing and off balance. Easier to knock him down too.

One cardinal rule when pertaining to a boxer's footwork is to never crossover when stepping. Number one it leaves you off balance, number two that results in you being more susceptible to being hit and knocked down. You can also not mount an effective defense or offense if your crossing your feet. Side stepping keeps a boxer balance and centered. It creates angles for him to use when throwing punches, and when moving in the proper direction, makes the boxer harder to hit.

it is so they can avoid a punch and counter attack in one movement very quickly and also be very stable all at the same time, side stepping is an art it is also used just for avoiding getting hit, in case u haven't noticed the ring is square so by going back in a straight line would not get you very far lol, you can move around the ring quite quickly by side stepping and also change your angles very efficiently
To the lady who thinks punching while on your toes gives you confidence, you obviously know nothing, all boxers and any fighter Will know to get maximum force out of your punch is to have your feet firmly planted on the floor whilst throwing

They side step for the following of reasons:
1. If they are sideways the opponent has less of a target to hit (if you face them you can get hit in the stomach , face more)
2. It's quicker to move away from the attack as they are always going to be on their toes, same for the offencive attack - they can move in and out.

boxers sidestep because it keeps them on their toes and also because it is easier to throw a punch. If you were flat footed you would get hit A LOT and also when you are on tip-toes it makes you feel more confident, even if you are losing

So you can avoid a punch, and still be in position to throw a punch. if you just stand there, you will keep getting hit
