They were GIANTS, plain and simple. larger adn taller than the normal person living at that time Remember Goliath.
In Numbers 13:33 And there we saw giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
These Giants sized men towered over people. (scary, yeah, but simply large human beigns)

They are sons of fallen angels. The translation "giants" is incorrect. Here's a teaching by highly respected Messianic Jewish scholar Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum on the subject:
http://www.ldolphin.org/nephilim.html#anchor20176839
Here's an excerpt:
"First is the name Nephilim. In some translations the word Nephilim has been translated by the word "giant." People reading it picture huge human beings. But the word does not mean "giants"; rather, it means "fallen ones." The word does not refer to giants in the sense of huge beings, but to a race of fallen ones. The reason it was translated as "giant" is because in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament made around 250 B.C., the Jewish scholars translated verse 4 by the Greek word gigentes which means "Titan." Our English word "giant" comes from this Greek word gigentes. But what were the Titans in Greek mythology? They were part man and part god, because they were products of gods and men. When the Jewish scholars in 250 B.C. translated the word Nephilim to Greek, they used the Greek word for Titans because they recognized this to be a union not of two types of human beings, but of angels and humans which produced a being that was neither angelic nor human. So at least the Jewish scholars Of 250 B.C., who lived much closer to the time when Moses originally wrote this passage, clearly understood this to be an intermarriage between angels and human women. As a result of this union, a new race of beings called the Nephilim, a race of fallen ones, came into being. "

Nephilim, pronounced 'nepheeleem', from the King James Version of the bible is translated 'giants', and literally means 'fallen down ones'. They were considered very tall celestial beings that had fell from the heavens. In Genisis 6:4 they are described as 'mighty men, heros of old, men of renown'.
Divine beings, heavenly creatures, lowering themselves to the level of human kind, to come down and mate with the women. This is nothing new to those who have read all the Greek mythology stories, and pagan legends, of gods and immortal ones coming down to have sex with mortal beings. Their offspring too were men of huge stature and unnatural strength.
Remember Hercules, son of Zeus????
seems to be a hangover of the Greek Mythology, here!?!?

It's sort of like the old Gods of ancient times. Gods who were cast out of heaven when the One God took over. They were cast into the sea. They will not be released until end times. Then they will be released by and join Satan's army and overthrow God and once again rule the world. BB

"When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown"

We don't really know for sure, but we do know that Nephillim translated means fallen ones. Perhaps the Nephillim are angels who feel and roamed the earth.
