The Taliban are Sunni. So are al qaida, so they get along better than some other muslim groups.

The two main branches in islam are Sunni and Shi'a. After the death of the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh), it was believed that his successor should be his son or a direct descendant -- these are the Shi'a and so recognize his son-in-law as the next in line.

Sunni's, on the other hand, believe that the successor should simply be a good and holy man and not necessarily related to Muhammad (pbuh).

The two main groups (the Sunni group is the larger of the two) are further broken down into schools of law -- how they interpret both the Qur'An and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Again, these groups are also broken down into smaller groups based on various differences including how strictly the Qur'An is to be interpreted. Some are ultra-conservative and some are more liberal.

The Taliban was the political party that ruled Afghanistan for a particular point in time. Check out the links below.

PS....wondering about that (pbuh)? It means Peace be upon him and is said or written immediately after his name at all times as a sign of respect -- kind of like we would say, "Rest in peace". Muslims also use it after the name of Abraham and even Jesus -- two more prophets in Islam.
