Not all Christians use semantics to get out of arguments. Many of us are stubborn that we believe what we believe. I agree that people using some of the examples you gave are splitting hairs. Although very specifically with money it IS love of money. The love of anything above God is considered the root of all evil. As for the "they aren't true Christians," they may not be acting in a way that Christ would, and perhaps they haven't for a long time. If they are actually making an effort to act in the way that Christ would, they are being Christians, if they're running around saying they are Christian and yet do not adhere to the teachings of Christ and do not try to emulate him, they aren't true Christians. Hitler wasn't an atheist, but he did think that he could unite all of Europe under him without God's help.

Semantics......most of them aren't clever enough for it.
Cheap tactics.....you bet!
I don't blame any religious person if they throw illogical at me, the whole business of religion is illogical!
And hey, don't get me wrong folks, I believe in God, but I do not believe He can be scientifically proven.
Look at the source if you want to know the tricks, your conversations can become a lot more interesting and you might win!
Or try this: For whatever they say just ask "how do you know that so and so is true?"
Be diligent. Ultimately they end up with things as "it is a feeling" or something of the sort. Then ask:
"So every decision you make and basically your entire life is based on a feeling? How do you know this feeling is correct?"

I'm not sure that the word is stubborn to describe Christians. It also depends on who you are talking to about Christianity. Being a Christian means you are followind the teachings of Christ. It is a difficult road to follow and many Christians & non-Christians have veered off the path. I don't consider myself a 'Holy-Roller' and I am very far from perfect, but I have been changed by the Holy Spirit. It's a pretty amazing thing.

We use semantics ( I suppose you're referring to the study of the language of the Bible) because these are our basic beliefs. Jesus' teachings are the rules for life as far as the Christian is concerned. We don't (or can't) always be follow His Word to the letter as hard as the true Christian may try. All Christians sin. The Bible states this repeatedly. We all make mistakes. We are not perfect... just forgiven. This is the entire purpose of Jesus' death on the cross.
As far as being stubborn, are you not stubborn concerning the things you believe in with your heart and soul?

Matthew 7:5 (That's a special scripture for you).
It's called the truth. If the Bible says it then that's what it is. That's why it's called the Word of Truth.
Besides, it's not about semantics or dialect (or whatever other linguistic form you may try to label it). The Bible wasn't brought to us for literature purposes. It was anointed to bring about revelation in the knowledge and wisdom of God.

Because that's the only way they can win the arguments? Although it seems that tautological arguments and other logical fallacies also seem to be a strong suit with them in debate as well....

By doing that they are able to twist the bible into their way of thinking. Apparently, if it's quoted from the bible it's a true statement. It's all in the interpretation.

They are correct in not allowing you to change the meaning of the Bible by changing the words it makes all the difference. It is you who are wrong. You could go to Hell for pulling stunts like that. BB

I can only assume they do so because they (like all the rest of us) don't like having their views criticised on the basis of flawed interpretations.
Christians don't have a monopoly on this.
