tea tree essential oil neat on the cold sore works really well. I use it with acyclovir cream and my cold sores always go after 2 or 3 days without all that awful crusting and scabbing.
ps anitbiotics will not work for cold sores, they're caused by a virus. Acyclovir tablets will probably only be prescribed if the infection is a major one and causing problems not jsut for a basic cold sore.
Good luck

Blistex works for me, but you need to apply it (with clean hands) as often as you think of it. I also heard that neat tea tree oil works for me - just make sure you only put it on the actual cold sore (it can burn skin).
Also I dose myself up with vit c (usually cheat with a berocca tablet in water and then as much oj as i can face). plenty of sleep, they flare up when you're run down not eating a balanced diet and not getting enough sleep.

I sympathise, i get cold sores from time to time and there's nowt worse. I think the best thing for them is zovirax, it takes a couple of days, but just keep putting it on all the time. You can get it on prescription from the doctor, or you can just buy it in the chemist.
Good luck :-) xx

have you tried the new product on the market for cold sores. i cant remember what they are called but they are little patched that look like contact lenses. you put one over the cold sore and then you can apply your lipstick as normal and no one can see it. it is an instant fix but it also heals the cold sore in the process. ask at you chemist they will know what im talking about! good luck

Lorraine D: Get on down to a good Health Food store -in Makati..
and invest in a small bottle of Lysene pills. THEY will 'zap' them,
I promise (-so long as yo' [also eat] a piece of fruit, on rising;
and DO NOT EVER touch your cold-sore
-except with a cotton-bud:
to apply a tiny 'dot' of Savlon -from a tube,
-from Mercury D.

when you find out could you let me know please as i have four come up in the same place and feel like the elephant man!!!!!!! to dry it up i use zovirax and when they get really bad the doctor can prescribe aciclovir tablets. i can dry mine up but then how can i get rid of the scab quickly? try lavender oil too, that helps it scab....the perfume theory is because of the alcohol in it but i find it burns and makes it scar. Good Luck Scabby.....Love from Scabby 2 xx

"Not a lot" is the unfortunate short answer to your exact question.
Cold sores are caused by a virus, think of having a cold - what can you do but hope your body's immune system will see it off as soon as possible.
There are over-the-counter applications, speak to your pharmacist.
I have been prescribed anti-viral drugs by my doctor (Valtrex I think it was, but Zovirax comes to mind), but that is an unlikely situation for a cold sore.

A doctor recomended Abreva cream last year and it seemed to work rather quickly. It was expensive but at the time, very much worth it!
