I am studying in religion, and I want to know what books aside from the Torah are used in the Jewish religion? What are the most accurate English translations of all of these books (including the Torah) used by Jewish people today, and can I find them online?

I am searching about books used specifically in the Jewish religion. Therefore I am asking that no one respond by telling me to use the bible. Thank you.

The Hebrew Scriptures consists of the Law (the Torah), the Prophets, and the Writings. These collectively are known as the Tanakh. It is essentially the same Old Testament canon used by evangelical Christians. Orthodox Jews also use the Talmud, a collection of rabbinic commentaries on the Scriptures. Unorthodox Jewish mystics also use the Kabbalah, an esoteric interpretation of Judaism similar to that of the Gnostics.

Some of the most reliable and most accurate English translations of the Jewish Scriptures can be found in several Bible versions (e.g. ESV, NASB), made by Christian scholars, many of whom were of Jewish blood and education.

Those who want to know practical Jewish Law, commonly use the Shulchan Aruch, which codifies much of Jewish law, in addition to many other books. However, many study the Mishna and Talmud (Gemara) with commentaries to understand the theory and background behind Jewish law. Mishna is a collection of laws extracted from the Bible (Torah), and the Talmud (Gemara) is a compilation of commentary, discussion, and application of the laws mentioned in the Mishna.

However, there is a ocen of knowledge in the Jewish tradition, including thousands of books on Jewish Ethics (e.g. Pirkei Avot), and Bible and Talmud commentaries.

Jewish books consists of two main areas - the Written law and Oral Law. The written law includes the Torah - 5 books of Moses - along with the Writings and Prophets. Artscroll (www.artscroll.com) certainly carry the best trabnslations of these books, though you can find a transliteration and translation of the Torah at http://www.headcoverings-by-devorah.com/HebEngTaNaKhIndex.html
The Oral law consits primarily of the Talmud. You can find the original hebrew at www.e-daf.com along with mp3 downloads in a few languages. A Christian translation of much of the Talmud can be found at http://www.sacred-texts.com/jud/talmud.htm

Here's a link to a very accurate translation of the Hebrew Bible, which is referred to as the Tanakh:

Other sources of reference would include the Mishneh Torah and the Midrash.

p.s. -- stay away from Kaballah.

Personally I use the Stone Edition Chumash which consists of the Torah and Haftaros. Pretty much anything you can find at Art Scroll is of good value.

Go to the website http://gtu.edu, the official website for the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California and find the email address for the Center for Jewish Studies. You can ask them the question, and they will be able to provide you with complete answers without dealing with answers like "the Bible", which is so inane that it doesn't count as an answer.
