Healthy eating and regular exercise. Also, get in to a good sleep pattern. That is all you can do, just ride it out and hope that it passes soon.

Are you just generally knackered and run down from the daily grind or has some event in your life triggered your low mood? There are good herbal remedies for mild insomnia and anxiety, but depression is a bit trickier because you have to know whether the cause is exhaustion from lack of rest ( common in Mums of young children) or from a life event like a major loss, or childhood trauma, which could be helped with a bit of counselling more than drugs.
If it's just plain exhaustion, a herbal remedy like passiflora would help you get some rest. You also would need to meet up with some other woman/women your own age at least once a week and go for a swim or get your nails done or do a gentle exercise class just to get back in touch with yourself. Good Luck.

Some say St Johns Wort or Valerian but I have depression and when I first had it I tried the herbal things and can honestly say they did nothing at all for me (although St Johns Wort gave me a bad tummy) If you truly have depression the only medication that will work is what you get from your doctor. The medications are not like they were years ago and are no longer sedative type pills. I suggest going and having a chat with your GP - you dnt have to take what he offers if you dont gree with it xxxx

Herbs for Treating Depression
While many herbal remedies have been used traditionally to treat depression, the most substantial amount of scientific research has involved the following herb:
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Several studies indicate that St. John's wort may be as effective as tricyclic antidepressants, but with fewer side effects. Reported side effects include gastrointestinal complaints, fatigue, and oversensitivity to sunlight. Because of potential adverse interactions, St. John's wort should not be taken in conjunction with other antidepressants or with certain medications, including indinivir (a protease inhibitor used for HIV), oral contraceptives, theophylline, warfarin, digoxin, reserpine, cyclosporine, and loperamide.
Although they have yet to be scientifically evaluated for their use in treating depression, the following are a few examples of herbs that may be recommended by professional herbalists for depression or its related symptoms:
• Valerian root (Valerian officinalis)—may improve symptoms of insomnia associated with depression
• Damiana (Turnera diffusa)—may reduce sexual dysfunction associated with many antidepressant medications
• Ginseng (Panax ginseng)—may help the body resist stress

Some herbs that you can buy growing in a small pot, from a market place or garden centre; Rosemary, lemon balm, and thyme, these should cost about a quid each. Keep them on your window sill or plant out in Spring if you have time for it. You can nibble or make teas with these, (cut fresh and steep for 5mins) the important thing is these are Tonics, fresh, safe, non addictive, can be used in cooking. Thyme used in evening as it is good for anxiety and can calm one enough to sleep. Rosemary, best for tonic, and refocussing on the positive - even just a deep breath of the plant's scent can have an immediate affect. This I would say is advantageous in the long run, as you will not be dulled by chemicals, but will have the focus to deal with life's trials and tribulations, with energy and not lethargy. God's creation has within it all we need, and His love comes to you through me. I wish you the best.

Honny you need to stop looking at the herbal remedys for depression that'll just make it worse. Look into things such as shrooms that will make your depression go away for hours. Umm... What else ever tried tequila- margaritas are great, long island ice teas. ;)

Looking for something that is cheap shows that you are already headed in the wrong direction. Most things (foods, cleaners) are made cheap and cause problems for the body. I don't know the reason for the depression but it could be that the right vitamins and minerals are missing from the body.
