Anyone know of anybody willing to take on an apprentice, in south east of england? Or anybody tell me their stories of how they became a tattoo artist?

Thank you.

Yes I do watch miami, blooming amazing artists. I know they will treat me like a dog but I really don't care it's something I really want to do.

I am 17, 18 in november.
I have really good artistic ability, it's all I've ever wanted to do since I could pick up a pencil.

go round some of your local shops and see what they think of your art work. First make sure you take Art alevels. but that is no guarantee. I went to one shop in suffolk (grinandwearit) and was told i had "no artistic talent" after getting 100% on my art alevel and winning several awards for my paintings. Im now completing an apprenticeship in the US at an award winning and US wide known studio. Make sure you draw your *** off. also see the sticky thread under apprenticeships in everytattoo.com forum. Do not try and go it alone. NEVER START OUT AS A SCRATCHER. IF they wont take you ask why, ask for advice how to get to that point.

OH and BS to abusing apprentices. you might have to clean tubes and stuff but that can be a good learning experience. Ive been sprayed with soap once in the entire time ive worked here and it was during a soap fight. so dont listen to people about apprentice hazing cos its all for a laugh.

you should draw.... alot! try to get stencil paper and practice putting "tattoos" on people with the stencil. color them in with markers or whatever, try to work on your shading and all that jazz.

If you have equipment then practice tattooing fruit, such as oranges, melons, grapefruits. anything that has a nice skin on it so that you get the idea of putting the needled into skin.

my tattoo artist once said that if you can tattoo a chicken skin without completely shredding it, then you are doing pretty good.
(the chicked is raw)

good luck. i want to be a tattoo artist too, but i don't have any equipment, so i am kinda stuck. :(

Here is a really good interview I did with tattoo artist 'Nearly Painless' James in which he talks about tattoo apprenticeships.

Also another article on becoming a tattoo artist which may help.

How old are you? Do you have any artistic abilities? As an apprentice (which BTW shouldn't last more than a year!), you will be treated like a dog. All artists like to abuse their apprentices.
