I have always had trouble swallowing pills. Just started on Metformin, and it is a big pill. You can't crush, split, or break it because it is time released. Any good advice how to make swallowing this pill easier.

I am taking Metformin 500MG RE Tab,
I did ask the pharmacist, and was told this is what the script was from my doctor.

it's not very common (in fact, very uncommon) to have someone on the time released tablet form of metformin. the regular metformin tablets are almost exclusively used, especially considering there are no generic forms of the time released metformin, only brand name (glumetza). confirm with your pharmacist that the one you are taking is the extended release version. if it is, then unfortunately there isn't much you can do asides from trying to swallow it with somethign smooth like apple sauce or liquid yogurt.

do NOT put it into an ice cube try and freeze it. the drug has been designed to only be chemically stable at room temperature and by freezing it (or by over heating it - ie: in your car on a hot summer day) you potentially affect the chemical balance of the tablet. this can cause alot of different problems including the drug not working or the drug not being released in our body properly

Well, in a word, yes. The purpose of the staggered dosing is so that you always have a therapeutic level of the drug in your system. If you took 3 pills all at one time, then you would get a big dose of medication shortly thereafter, and then nothing 20 or 22 hours later. Are you a diabetic? Perhaps the doctor is trying to keep your blood sugar at a more acceptable level? If so, then you need to take those pills spread out over the day. Millions of people have learned to take pills, and you can, too. It's not an impossible job.

Ask your doctor about alternative meds or others forms of the Metformin. Explain the problem you're having with swallowing the large pill. Doctors will usually work with you to find something easier to take.

I have found the easiest way to take pills.
Fill your mouth with water, DON'T SWALLOW YET, tilt your head back, open your mouth and drop the pill into the water in your mouth and swallow it all. It goes down with the water, you don't taste it and usually don't even notice it going down. I take several pills at once this way. NO PROBLEM!!!
