It really depends on what part you want to base your "operations" in. L.A. is huge (I'm sure you know this) if you are going to do Disneyland, then staying in Orange County (South of L.A.) is your best bet. You DON'T want to stay in the hotels near the airport (pricey and the surrounding neighborhood is dodgy) Hollywood is a nice, central place...but again, not cheap and there some areas you don't want to be in after dark.

Pasadena is a nice place that's freeway-close to everything.

I generally take visitors to see the Getty Museum (free, but $8.00 to park a car), the Grauman's Chinese Theater (where the footprints are in cement), Disneyland (if they've never been)...and our Observatory/Planetarium has just re-opened after several years closed for renovations.

Have fun.

Renting a car is a must.

You can get around with the subway and buses if you happen to be near some direct routes - but it is hard and time consuming. And if you have to change buses - you'll be waiting a while. This is a large spread out city.

You can go about anywhere in LA during the day. At night night be in downtow, south central, compton or east la.

Most hotels should include parking.

Haha...I live in the area and it's not dangerous. Well, it depends on what part of Los Angeles you're talking about. LA is HUGE! If you're talking Compton, Watts, or Inglewood (all parts of los angeles), then yeah, it could be kinda dangerous. I just don't go there. I'm closer to Hollywood, which is safer. To tell u the truth about Hollywood, its not all glamourus as it seems on TV. It's actually the opposite. It's run down and ghetto. Lots of homeless people and weirdos, but it can be fun there sometimes. Like anywhere u go, just be careful and watch your surroundings. I don't think the smog is that bad. Only on rare occasions it bothers my lungs. For the most part, in the newspaper, it lists most parts of los angeles as having good, clean quality air.

Father K is spot on.

If you are going to be driving and sightseeing, invest in a Thomas Guide Map Book and learn how to use it. You do not want to get lost and running out of gas.

Most hotels/motels offer free parking to guests. Be aware that many, many other places charge for parking.

This is the rainy season. It can also get unseasonable warm. So pack accordingly. Layers should be your mantra.

Enjoy!

L.A. is basically not cheap. Many places have free parking with
room, however.
You didn't mention your age. Assume you're a man.
Overall, it's a safe city. Just use common sense.
West Hollywood very gay area. You wouldn't stand around
on Santa Monica Blvd. late at night or your would be mistaken
for soliciting.
