I'm in charge of decorating for our Young @ Heart Banquet at church. This is a yearly banquet that our kids honor our older members (60+). They also put on a program & this year it's The Wizard of Oz. I always try to make the theme of the banquet compliment the program. However I don't like to use the actual performance as decorations, etc.

I am wanting to do something in the line of "Kansas" since this is where the movie takes place to begin with. I don't want to use Emerald City, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions so far...but I don't want to decorate using anything from the WOZ as we will have the sets. I want something to compliment it...

1. "All the comforts of home" Have baskets, quilts, antiques, etc. about.

2. "The front porch" Crocks and vases of sunflowers, wheat stalks, poppies, rocking chairs, pitchers of lemonade, and plates of sugar cookies.

Have you thought of actually having the banquet on stage among the play's set up for Dorothy's home? If your stage is big enough, that would be quite dramatic and nice. If you do this, and it is directly following a show - you'll need a holding room for cocktails/hor deruves though so your team can rapidly set up the stage for dinner afterwards. While your group is in the lobby, have pre-set tables moved onto stage fitting wtih your theme. Decorations can include a may pole, picnic tables, wicker baskets filled with fresh wild flowers, checkered table clothes, and food coudl be a selection of gourmet sandwiches including (but not limited to): roast veg in a hard italian bread, prosuitto/ripe vine tomato/frisse in a french baguette (gourmet BLT), cucumebr sandwiches, smoked salmon sandwiches, and roast beef sandwiches. Serve a nice punch on the side and dump some frozen juice in it in ice cube form. For dessert, carve out watermelons and dump in fruit salad and serve with a zabayone. Or, serve some drunken berries along wtih angel cake and raspberry whip cream - compliment with coffee and tea service.

It would be easy just to do a farm theme. Then for the banquet you can serve country dished like fried chicken and biscuits with gravy. Get some bales of hay and checkered tablecloths.

If you want to do something with KS, do a state check on google to see what they are famous for like sunflowers that would be ever so easy to use and you could always use the website: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/kansas/ it is full of facts and symbols and ideas about KS in general ......as far as food goes if that is a factor, I live in MO and we eat lot's of meat and potatoes but sunflowers would be really cute! Good luck

Don't use the Emerald City, use the apple orchard! Or the poppy field.
Kansas has been done. Been there. Do the poppy field, or the WW of the E's castle
Do you know what her soldiers sing?
"All we owe, we owe her, all we owe, we owe her."
Gives one the shivers.

My courage because my brain thinks of all the things that could go wrong and my heart feels too much fear for it's own good.
