With gestational diabetes there is an underlying condition which causes the onset of diabetes, pregnancy. Pregnancy causes a lot of stress on your body, such as hormone imbalances, which can cause many changes, diabetes, blood pressure,etc...When the underlying cause is no longer there(about 9 months) things revert back to normal.
