Depending of where you live you just need to go to the ethnic food section of your market. They are with the Mexican staples. They are usually dried and kinda look like dehidrated red bell peppers.

Ancho chilies are actually Poblano chilies that have been dried. So they look all dark and shriveled. Look in a Mexican food source.

as far as finding them you should say where your looking ! but what they look like, are dried deep red in color and basically if , you know what a passilla looks like ,just imagine it red in color and really not much difference in shape .as far as taste it has more meaty content and are prefered as a paste for sauces and meats for the low heat and flavor -great for chicken and pork !!
