the polite thing to do is to leave it

(unless the host(ess) asks you to take it home)

If it's an informal dinner party with really close family and friends, then you could probably feel free to hijack those uneaten goodies. But otherwise, any food or drink is considered a gift for the host or hostess, and it would be tacky to take back that gift. Feel good knowing that those left over dishes are frequently eaten by the family who hosted the party while they recover from the stress and strain of throwing the party and cleaning up after.

If you REALLY want those snacks back, offer to help clean up after the party. Often a host/hostess will ask if you'd like to take any dishes home with you once the mess is cleaned up.

Unless the host asks you if you want it back, NO, it's not OK. If you bring it in your own dish or glassware, ask the host or hostess if they have a spare dish for you to transfer the leftovers into. In most cases, the host will ask if you just want to take the leftovers home. In that case, it's OK.

If it's drinks, especially alcohol, it's really in poor taste to ask if you can take it home. In most cases, it's considered a host/hostess's gift when you bring alcohol to a dinner party.

Unless the host/hostess asks if you want to take it back home, don't even think about it. It falls under the same rule as the tasteless guests who fill up their own leftover bag while folks are still eating.

Why would you? You brought it for the host and I think you should leave it with the host. Do remember though, if it is your plate ask the host to put it into something else so you can have it back, and at the same time I hope the hosts says thank-you. If the host doesn't say it then next time take the whole think back with you. Did that help?

Kind of tacky if you do. You could always ask the hosts if they are not going to use it is it OK if you take it back with you? Whatever, if you're not set on ever being invited back then go for it. Just remember that people do recall questionable manners and those who displayed them. Would hate to be remembered as a jerk for the price of a few eats.

Well I think it is perfectly appropriate to take it back, provided you are not leaving in the middle of the party!!

The host generally would have a lot of left overs from his preps and your stuff might end up in trash the next day.. so why not make good use of it, if you can!!

If you bring it in your own dish, then yes...so if you are going to bring something generic, like chips, place them in a bowl of your own before bringing...that way if there are leftovers, you are ok taking them home. If you don't bring it in your own container, and the host is a good friend, then just ask if you could take the rest home with you. Any other situation, and it is more proper to leave it.

To be safe talk it over with whoever is throwing the party. Most of the ones I go to beg you to take food home but some people are offended by that.

Consult the host(ess). The best way is to say "Would you like me to leave this with you?"
Why did no one eat it? If no one would eat it the host probably doesn't want it either.
If you took beverages or packaged foods you need to leave them.

I offer some to the hostess or if anyone else wants some and I take the rest home.

It's actually rude to take it back. But talk to the host/hostess about it. They most likely will say YES take it home! ;-)

If it is a pot luck, then yes you take it back home. n
