Patricia is on the right track. The bacteria that causes gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) can not only cause infection of the urethra, rectum and reproductive tract, but it can also cause infection of the mouth, throat and eyes. What you are talking about, in doctor-speak, is called GONOCOCCAL PHARYNGITIS. Quite simply, this means infection of the throat by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and it is typically transmitted through unprotected oral sex. This can't be diagnosed on a rapid strep test, but can be diagnosed by culture using a specific kind of agar (Thayer-Martin) if it is suspected.
